Leeds, England (Voyage in the Dark)

Leeds is a city located in West Yorkshire in northern England. It's the largest area in Yorkshire, and known as an industrial capital. During the early 1900s, the population of Leeds grew quickly to approximately 178,000, and during the 1920s and 1930s, the first council houses were constructed. Additionally, in 1925, St. James Hospital was founded in Leeds. During this time, engineering and manufacturing industries were huge, however despite its prosperity at this time, the city suffered during WWII as bombs killed 77 individuals and collapsed 197 buildings. Leeds is mentioned briefly in Voyage in the Dark when the narrator lists the English cities she has visited so far:

"I kept telling myself, "You've got to think of something. You can't stay here. You've got to make a plan." But instead I started counting all the towns I had been to, the first winter I was on tour -- Wigan, Blackburn, Bury, Oldham, Leeds, Halifax, Huddersfield, Southport. ... I counted up to fifteen..."
