I want to take a look at the way in which Bertha is depicted in illustrations of Jane Eyre, and how her animalistic image is tied to her status as creole.

The Madwoman

"The Madowman" is an image of Bertha Mason and Jane Eyre done in 1943 by Fritz Eichenberg. It is a wood engraving on paper. The image also accompanies the passage from the book that reads "it was a discolored face - it was a savage face".
