Bible Verse: 1 Timothy 5:8

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

This verse embodies my perspective on life. Growing up, my father loved this verse. In my youth, every night before I went to bed he would read this verse to me. I admired my father thus his death in April a few years ago was a troublesome time for me. Without my father to provide for our family, we went into poverty. And to exacerbate the situation, we were forced to move out of the home from our youth. After my father’s pacing, and since my mother has never been around, I decided to carry on their legacy by caring and providing for my family. In order to accomplish my new goal,  I knew something had to change. This is how our journey to the photography studio began. Family is my biggest priority. I will never forget when silly Phyllis was about to run away with that married man Darrell. I had to follow her to prevent her from making a mistake. The heartbreak affected sweet Phyllis very poorly and she passed away not long after. Thus, another reason why this verse embodies my ideals of life. God performs in mysterious ways and sometimes takes people from you early. Not only am I carrying my father’s legacy, but also Phyllis’. Since I never expected I would lose two members of my family so soon, I prioritize staying connected to my family. Even though some of us are all living in different places and Lucy is married, we assured that we would all stay connected because there is no relation stronger than a family relation.

Editorial commentary: Reading this verse, the audience is unaware of who Gertrude’s father is; however, it can be concluded that he has a heartwarming personality. This can be attributed to the fact that he seems to deeply value taking care of his loved ones.He reflects qualities of a loving and loyal father. These qualities are mirrored by Gertrude as well. Gertrude stands out in comparison to most women during the Victorian period. She was born into a time where women are undervalued and not given the recognition they deserve; however, Gertrude takes on different qualities. Gertrude’s determination to carry on her father’s legacy is evidence that she adopts qualities that are not exclusive to men. She seizes the role of “the man of the house” while not only providing for her family, but also starting a photography business. Gertrude embodies the image of a fierce woman that women rights activists have fought for from her era to now. Her strength shows the courage of a true woman and defies the social expectations of women during the Victorian era. She exemplifies these qualities further by pursuing her passion of writing. Female writers were looked down upon during this time period; therefore, they were less successful.  Nevertheless Gertrude withstood these social norms by continuing to seek her passion of writing. Her character embodies the motivations and goals that many women’s rights movements begin with. Gertrude should be seen as a woman to look up to because she does not let the Victorian social norms limit her.
