Mary, Percy, and Claire arrived here around 10pm.  In History of a Six Weeks' Tour, Mary highlights the landscape, saying it's "prettily situated in a valley, through which the Seine flows, winding among banks with variegated trees."  Claire exclaimed about its beauty and wanted to live there, though she said that about many places they travelled.

Charenton is an old, industrial town, but it no longer boasts the same industrial/manufacturing culture.  Charenton is known for its insane asylum, started in 1645.  1814, the year of our travellers, was the year Marquis de Sade died at the asylum.  De Sade, whose writings are known for being perverse and erotic--and the namesake for "sadism"--quickly made him an enemy of Napoleon, so Napoleon had him jailed.  The asylum also housed Henri Lature in the 1770s, who was known for escaping from prisons.
