Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus was written in 1818 by Mary Shelley when she was only 18. It widely considered one of the first major works in science fiction, and is what set Mary Shelley apart from her famous poet husband Percy Shelley. The story covers heavy themes about the reprecussions of reckless science, which was a rampant fear during that time. The creation of the story is rather interesting, as Mary and her husband were trapped indoors with some friends in Geneva on vacation when she thought of it. While being trapped, the group decided to tell each other scary stories to pass the time, creating both Frankenstein and a short story by one of Mary's friends called The Vampyre.
