The painter George Frederick Watts exhibited The Good Samaritan in the 82nd exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1850. The painting was inspired by the Manchester prison philanthropist Thomas Wright. Later novelist Elizabeth Gaskell was part of a successful plan to purchase the painting for the city of Manchester, where it is now part of the permanent collection of the Manchester Art Museum.
