Goblin Market - 1906

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

This book was reprinted and published by Christina Rosetti and illustrated by Dion C. Calthrop in London (publishers T.C & E.C. Jack) in approximately 1906. Though the text in this edition is in full and unchanged, it is clearly made for a child through the images and has been manipulated since the original story published in 1866. This version of the story is marketed towards children and we can tell by the use of bright colours as well as the nature of the pictures. The women shown are in a warm home and dressed more modestly as opposed to other editions where they are shown in the woods, many times naked, in sexual positions. Most of the sexual elements have been erased through these images. As well, the goblins are not so much terrifying as they are more menacing, almost like they are there as a teaching tool to children It is also clear that the book has been marketed towards children through where the words are in relation to the images. The words are broken up in lines to compliment the images rather than, as seen in other versions, a huge block of text being shown with a couple of images off to the side.
