Goblin Market - 1912

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

This rendition of Christina Rosetti's Goblin Market is a reprint, and was published in 1912 by George Routledge & Sons Ltd. in London, England. The original version of this book was published in 1862, by Macmillan, with illustrations by Dante Gabriel Rosetti. This edition, however, was illustrated by Margaret W. Tarrant, who was born on December 5, 1830, and died on December 29, 1894. This edition was marketed towards a child audience, made evident through the artist's decision to depict the characters as younger and more childlike; the goblins also look less-menacing than they do in other illustrated versions of this text. Essentially, images are more in-line with pictures one would find in a children's fairytale. Though the text is printed in full, and unchanged, Tarrant removed the sexual subtext from the images to appeal to the child audience.
