Goblin Market and Other Poems (1923)

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

This version of Rosetti’s “Goblin Market” was published by Blackie & Son Ltd. in London in 1923. This publishing company was known for making gift books in the early 20th century. It seems to be marketed towards adults because it contains fewer illustrations compared to editions for children. The illustrations also appear to darker and more erotic which is not meant to be shown to children. Christina Georgina Rosetti (1830-1894) was a poet and this book contains other poems such as “Up-hill”, “The Convent Threshold” and “Maude Clare”. The artist for this book was Florence Susan Harrison (1877-1955) and she has done other work for Christina Rosetti, William Morris and Sir Alfred Tennyson. There are two drawings at the beginning of the book: one on the cover page and one on the page beside it. The illustration on the cover page seems to be of different creatures holding fruit or baskets with friend and it seems to symbolize the goblins from “Goblin Market”. The illustration on the other page is from Rosetti’s poem “A Birthday” and it includes the first line of the poem “My heart is like a singing bird.” The book also contains an illustration surrounding the title for the poem “Goblin Market” depicting grim goblin figures walking across a field.
