Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti, Dover Edition 1983

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

This Dover edition of Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market, with illustrations by Laurence Housman, was first published in 1983 and is an unabridged republication of the original edition published by Macmillan & Company in London, 1893. This edition was published in Toronto, Ontario by General Publishing and in the United Kingdom by Constable and Company, but was manufactured in New York City, U.S. at Dover Publications Incorporated. Dover Publications, also known as ‘Dover Books’, specializes in publishing reissues and reprints of books, usually ‘classics’ or books in the public domain, no longer printed by their original publishers. This 1983 edition of Goblin Market is an unabridged republication of the original, meaning it has not been adapted or changed in any way. Although Housman’s illustrations emphasize a sexualized understanding or interpretation of the text, the edition was marketed to children. Laurence Housman was born in 1865 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire and was educated at the Bromsgrove Art School, in London at the Miller’s Lane Art school, and at the National Art Training School in South Lambeth. Housman was the first to design Christina Rossetti’s Goblin Market as an independent volume in 1893, which was recognized by the President of the Royal Academy. He also worked closely with his sister Clemence on illustration and wood-engraving and was a supporter of women’s suffrage. As a facsimile reprint, this 1983 edition of Goblin Market features twelve full page illustrations as well as textual ornaments and decoration.
