Historical Context- Trench warfare was very common in the first World War, these trenches were mostly in northeastern France and Switzerland battlefields. Trenchs were needed to allow soilders to burrow under the ground to shield themselves from enemy weapons. 

Affects Literary Work- Owen was a soilder that participate in trench warfare, and he expresses the fear that came from being in this particular type of warfare.
