Written by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Gothic is in the name of this novel, and it is very atmospheric and stereotypically gothic. But, that is not all that this book has in the focus of Gothic. Just like the novels of the 1800s, this novel plays with a marriage plot and the fears that can surround it. There are a lot of anxieties in this book, the main one being the fear of a husband hurting his wife because she has been moved away from her family. I found this book compelling, even though there was a somewhat supernatural aspect to the book, much of it gave the characters the ability to act in their true actions. They did not have a lot holding them back. The marriage plot has come up multiple times in our discussions in class, and this had that in a main focus. There was a focus on what can go wrong in marriages, especially ones that are arranged for reasons other than love. The arrangement of these marriages is what set the plots in motion, helping the anxieties that were there in the 1950s (when the novel is set) and still in modern day. Mexican Gothic is a novel that does not use the gothic only as set-dressing, but uses many of the same themes and focuses as the Gothic novels of the past.
