Newcastle is a large city in northeastern England, roughly 300 miles from London but only 100 miles south of Edinburgh. It is situated on the River Tyne and its people are commonly referred to as Geordies. Newcastle has a long history as a port and shipyard. In the nineteenth century, Newcastle was known not only for its domestic coal exports but also for its railways and engineering. Despite a devastating fire in 1854, Newcastle has excellent examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, sometimes known as Tyneside Classical.
