The Royal College of Art was founded in 1837 in Somerset House on the south side of the Strand, London, as the Government School of Design or Metropolitan School Design. It was renamed the Normal Training School of Art in 1857 and then the National Art Training School in 1863. It was mainly a teacher training college in the later nineteenth century. Its pupils included George Clausen, Christopher Dresser, Like Fildes, Kate Greenway, and Gertrude Jekyll.
