Wordsworth attended university at St. John's College, Cambridge (1787-1791).  Beginning with high promise, he graduated without honors because he gave his attention to things other than study: rashly touring Europe during the Napoleonic wars and writing poetry.

He would return to the Lake District permanently by 1799.  Although he remained devoted to this area, his education, world experience, and different social class appear to have inserted a cultural barrier between himself and the humbler inhabitants of Grasmere that neither side could ever fully cross.
