Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

George Eliot, Sketch by Caroline Bray (circa 1842)

Caroline Hennell Bray (1814-1905) created these four portraits, most of which are sketches and one of which is a watercolor. Cara Bray was one of Eliot's closest friends. Eliot writes that Cara's "benevolence" to her "extends to the hiding of faults in my visage as well as my character" (GEL 1954, 1: 147).
