These are photos taken of a small garden outside my parents' house. Several of my mom's friends came and planted this tree for my mom in memory of my older sister Brittany, and my other sisters and I helped our parents plant the flowers around the base of the tree. I knew that I wanted to include this garden in my photos, and when I happened to go outside to take them, this butterfly was in the garden (an Eastern tiger swallowtail). This was special to me, as in my family, we see butterflies, specifcally yellow ones, as a sign from our loved ones who have passed. I thought that including the statue of the unicorn and the angel would create an interesting argument, as we often use nature and landscape/foilage to honor the deceased. To do this memorializing, we often have to scrape the land of what foliage was already there, to then replace it with what we have deemed "appropriate" for the memorial. The creation of my parents' garden only misplaced some dirt and grass, but some other larger scale memorials displace so much more in natural landscape. Is it right for us to permanently alter the earth so that our grief can be eased ever so slightly?
