One Touch of Nature Makes the Whole World Kin

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

Persons Gathered at Window Viewing a Painting

In this painting by Thomas P. Hall, one can view many of the different classes of Victorian society.  All are enjoying an artwork that presumably shows a natural scene; the viewer is looking out at the street from inside an art dealer's shop..  Note that there is both a well-dressed gentleman and lady, as well as a street urchin with a broom.  The child would possibly be a crossing sweeper, a child who would sweep the muck--horse dung, trash, mud--out of the street for people who wished to cross without getting dirty.  He would expect to receive a tip for this service; he wouldn't otherwise be paid.
