In the 19th century, women were expected to uphold a housewife standard. Women were expected to do the cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. Their role was way different from men in the 19th century. Women were not allowed to be outspoken, and they were not given the same opportunities as men. Women were expected to support a certain standard society painted for them to have. The picture shown gives you a visual of how women were expected to be in the 19th century. You see the woman is looking up to what looks like her husband, as well as her child looking up to her. She is supposed to be setting an example for her child. The woman portrays misery, she shows no facial expression. In the poem Goblin Market, two sisters Laura and Lizzie encounter goblins. These goblins tried to lure the sisters into buying their fruit, and eventually succeed. Laura disobeyed the rules of a woman in the 19th century because she fell for the taunting the goblins did, she ate the fruit. Meanwhile, Lizzie upheld the role of a woman in the 19th century and tried to convince her sister to stay strong.
