In the 19th century, women were expected to uphold a housewife standard. Women were expected to do the cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. Their role was way different from men in the 19th century. Women were not allowed to be outspoken, and they were not given the same opportunities as men. The role of men in the 19th century seemed easy. Men were supposed to uphold the financial side of the family. A man was required to work to provide for the needs of their family, while women stayed at home. Men were to take pride in what they do, they were offered multiple opportunities that women were not, for instance, men could vote which allowed them to voice their opinion. This picture is a great description of how most men thought. Most men were cocky and full of themselves. They assumed women were supposed to do as they say because they were given so more.  Prostitution is defined as using your body for sexual reasons in return for money. In the 19th century, this was common, men and women used it for multiple reasons. Men used this when their wives did not have the desire to fulfill their needs. Women used this for their own money, to protect their loved ones, and provide for them.  When googling prostitution in the 19th century most pictures pop up with the caption, "my sister's keeper".  Above the picture shows how these women are preparing themselves for a day full of what they consider lust, in return with a sense of hope…

When writing the poem, Goblin Market, Christian Rossetti was at the St. Mary Magdalene Penitentiary in Highgate which was created to correct fallen women. The term "fallen women" is described to be prostitutes and any woman that got caught having sex outside their marriage and was punished for it. The role C. Rossetti played was a supporter, she acted as a model to these women, in the same sense of a "sisters keeper". She uplifted these women through prayer. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christiana Rossetti's brother,  illustrated what he thought the goblins looked like and the two sisters. The poem describes each goblin to be different from the other. Each goblin had a distinct taunt, and look. Notice that the goblins are not fully humans, they contain animal features. One shaped like an owl, one a dog, one a cat, and so on. They were described like some hungry men, they constantly taunted the two sisters until one finally gave in. This is common in the world today, men use this strategy.
