Blog Post #11: ENG 910 - Ghoulish Demeanors

I found it very perplexing how my conception of A Christmas Carol differed significantly from the beginning of the semester compared to my later analysis of the graphic novel version. It was almost as if I was reading two completely different stories, just by the way they were illustrated! It really speaks towards the way modern illustration has evolved in a manner that is dynamic and visually-arresting. Not only with the more well-rounded colour palette, but the way in which depictions of the ghosts and the supernatural was cleverly illustrated. For instance, in the original designs by Leech, I found most of the ghosts to look human-like, not quite delving outside of the realm of humanoid figures. But in the works within the graphic novel, each of the supernatural figures was decidedly more wraithish in appearance. For instance, “The Air was Filled with Phantoms” gave off an overwhelming, frightening feel that I didn’t necessarily comprehend within the original text of the novel. The glowing blue hues, ghoulish expressions and compositional elements all portrayed the ghosts in a more haunting manner, I found.  In that sense, I enjoyed seeing how the graphic novel was able to add further layers of meaning onto the original story. This is definitely an observation I will take forth in the future when examining illustrations to understand how each stylistic aspect is in play.
