During today’s class, we looked at two different stories from Arthur Conan Doyle: “The Man with the Twisted Lip” and “The Adventure of the Speckled Band.” Since the beginning of the semester we have been discussing the important of how image, text and context work together in popular illustrated literature and these two Sherlock Holmes stories are no different. I have read “The Man with the Twisted Lip” before for another class but looking at it again with the focus on illustrations gave me a slightly different meaning of the text. For the image “He is a professional beggar” brought about a new connection to the text. Learning that St. Clair was living a double life a beggar to make more money works in his favor because of his childhood experience performing as an actor. Through this illustration to label St. Clair as a professional stems from the fact that he had the training to pursue this role as a beggar even though he is already a respectable businessman. It is also hard to ignore the commentary this illustration makes by commenting on homeless and poverty in London that these people are seen as different from the rest of society and are not treated the same way.
