The Great Fire of 1666

The Great Fire fo 1666 seems to be a great test of Londoners. It is a fire that is forever engrained in the minds of those who live in the great city as the fire took out thousands of homes. I can only imagine how sad people must have felt during this time. A great city in which 436 acres of land were destroyed so quickly(Ross and Clark 112). This quick destruction of peoples homes and land must have turned a seemingly beautiful space into a desolute and despairing area. Instead of the city being symbolic in greatness, it would be remembered during that time for the great destruction that occurred. Since so many people lost their homes, I imagine the spaces they recieved comfort from were now nonexistent.  It reminds me of the many fires going on throughout California. Right now the Sierra's are on fire, and a forest for me symbolizes peace and comfort as well as adventure, but as it burns down, it will become more a symbolic space of sadness. I think that this destruction remains in teh minds of Londoners because it is not something easily forgotten. The cathedral in itself took over 35 years to be rebuilt, as did most of the property I am sure. The amount of homes that were destroyed is unbelievable, and it must have thrown so many into poverty that probably stuck in the years to come. With that trauma in the back of people's minds it makes sense for them to be wary of another fire. The Londoners out of respect for their people and country probably look back and remember those who suffered during that time.
