Building of the Amphitheater
Amphitheaters were a source of entertainment for the people of Roman London during this time. The first one was built north-west from the main settlement. It was dug into the ground and built out of wood. Supporting the wooden tiers of seats, was an oval-shaped earth bank that surrounded the whole structure. Due to the amphitheater being built into the ground, it was susceptible to becoming waterlogged. Therefore, an oak draining system was built in to prevent this. The amphitheater saw many renovations in the passing years and remained a major form of entertainment for the Roman London people up until the 4th century. “Roman London.” London: the Illustrated History, by Catherine Ross and John Clark, Penguin, 2011, pp. 42–43.
