The Detective Branch of the Metropolitan Police Formed

The Police Act of 1829 caused the formation of a police force in London to combat crime and then in 1842, the detective branch of the police was formed, aimed to prevent crime instead of just dealing with the repercussions after-the-fact. This specialization of the police force shows the importance and value in having specialized positions. People understand that instead of just going to anyone in the field, it is necessary to go to a professional. After 1842, detectives start showing up as characters in fiction, such as Mr. Bucket in Dicken's Bleak House.
