Discovery and Applications of the First Lens

Discovered in 750 BC, Nimrud Lens is considered to be the oldest lens artefact. It is believed to have been used as a magnifying glass to read, to concentrate sunrays to start fires or as a decorative piece. It has a focal length which is roughly 12 centimetres (equal to a 3x magnifying glass). The image is from Wikimedia Commons and is available for public use.
