Dissolution of Monasteries

The dissolution of the monasteries in between 1530 and 1570 paved the way for a shift in the religious and economic aspects of London. The dissolution of the Catholic church led to the establishment of the Church of England. This was a country-wide shift in religion for London. Everyone was considered to be a member of the Church of England. This is seen within the novel Bleak House as all the characters display their sense of faith. Characters like Jellyby are more vocal about their faith and other characters, like Esther, are more subtle in their faith through their actions. Modern-day London has been influenced by this shift in religion through the reaping of the economic benefits.. Henry VIII's decision to acquire the monasteries, allowed the land to be transformed for secular use and allowed for London to expand properties and gain wealth, which is translated to modern-day London.
