First meeting of the Ruskin Society
The first meeting of the Ruskin Society, Manchester occurred on 15 Jan 1879. The Society aimed “To promote the study and circulation of Mr. Ruskin’s writings; to exemplify his teachings; and to aid his practical efforts of social improvement.” Many of the men involved in this Society were involved with reform schemes in Manchester, including bringing art to the poor and gifting the Royal Manchester Institute to the city.
