George Peabody

George Peabody was a well know philanthropist in the 19th century. Peabody was born in America, but also spent considerable time aiding the poor in London, where he died. Though Peabody did not cling tightly to any religion, his work is still worth noting in it's imporance to Bleak House and 19th century London. His work with the poor in London was looked on with favor in his time and was well repsected, stated by the Victorian Web. Peabody ties to Bleak House  because throughout the novel one can see the role philanthropy had through the characters of Mrs. Jellyby and Mrs. Pardiggle. Through Dickens, one can start to idenify which theory of philanthropy would be more favorable, futhermore, I think the theory of philanthropy practiced by Mrs. Pardiggle would more closely relate to Peabody. Accoriding to the Victorian Web, Peabody gave over $8,600,000 away. These funds were not only to the poor, but the money was also used to establish housing for the poor.
