Up until about age 11, Hilary Mantel's last name was Thompson. Her mother had a lover, Jack Mantel, who moved in with her family for four years, before her dad left at 11 years old. She never saw him again. Jack became her unofficial stepfather. Shortly after her father left, Hilary legally changed her surname from Thompson to Mantel.
