Margaret Thatcher

In 1979, Margaret Thatcher was sworn in as the first female Prime Minister. This was a major turning point within Britain and quickly changed the cultural context within British society. Along with changing the cultural context and role of women within British society, she also implemented change within the economy which led to lower unemployment rates and an overall higher economy. Additionally, Thatcher made owning a home more common than any other government leader and also adjusted income tax which helped working-class and low-class families in terms of finances. The concept of a female leader, owning houses, and the changes made throughout the economy and society were new concepts for Britain and represents a change from society within Dicken's era.
