Issues outlined in Bleakhouse still persisted in modern London, such as disease. In Bleakhouse, Dickens references the rampant diseases in London several times by featuring characters who have been struck by illness including Caddy's baby, Jo, and Esther. Tuberculosis, a disease associated with the poor, resurfaced in London. Despite the decades that had passed between the time of Dicken's novel to modern London, disease was an issue that remained.
