Royal Archaeological Assoc established

Photo of James TalbotIn September 1845, the Royal Archaeological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland was established. After an acrimonious split, the Archaeological Institute was founded as a rival to the British Archaeological Association, established in 1843-44. Both groups held regular summer meetings from the time of their inceptions onward. James Talbot, 4th Baron Talbot of Malahide was the president for 30 years until 1882.
