Sunday School Society formed

On 7 September 1785, the Sunday School Society was formed to coordinate free religious education among the more destitute poor on nondenominational (Christian) grounds. Until the 1870 Education Act, these schools provided basic instruction in reading, and in some cases writing and arithmetic.
