Cadiz, Spain

In North and South, Margaret Hale's older brother Frederick takes refuge first in South America and then in Cadiz, Spain. He cannot return to English due to his involvement in a mutiny while serving in the British Navy under a very cruel commanding officer. Fred, we learn, works for a British merchant named Mr. Barbour and becomes engaged with his daughter Anglo-Spanish Dolores. Margaret writes to Frederick in Cadiz, imploring him to visit their dying mother, and he comes to Milton at great personal risk. Today Cadiz is famous for its beautiful beaches, historical city walls and sunny weather.
