First love of her life?

Gilman met Martha Luther in about 1879, it is interesting because it was with another woman. As well as, the fact their relationship was a key influence in many of her writings. Additionally, from 1883 to 1889 they sent each other over 50 letters, including correspondence, illustrations, and manuscripts.

Going to school

In 1878, the eighteen-year-old enrolled in classes at the Rhode Island School of Design, this is crucial as it provides details of any formal education she may have received, furthermore, the Rhode Island School of Design hosts a multitude of alumni that have contributed to the arts.

First Marriage

In 1884, she married the artist Charles Walter Stetson, despite having hesitancy on marrying him, from all accounts the marriage seemed to be unstable and broken. This loveless marriage may have influenced her Magnus Opus, The Yellow Wallpaper, which tells a woman confined in the house due to her husband's controlling behavior.

The end of the month Spring 1885

Childbirth

 Their only child, Katharine Beecher Stetson, was born the following year on March 23, 1885. Around this time Charlotte Perkins Gilman suffered from a very serious bout of post-partum depression. In a time where women were seen as "hysterical" and "nervous" beings; additionally, because she had just given birth, doctors believed that her depression was a result of childbirth, so her concerns were dismissed
