Fountain

Description:

Sidney Sime is mostly known for his works published in periodicals but he also painted landscapes and created fantasy art. This painting, titled “Fountain” and without a date, bridges the line between landscape and fantasy art. The titular fountain sits slightly off-centre as rays of light beam down upon it, appearing almost geological with sharp lines and angles instead of hydrological. Fantasy is “often described by scholars…as a genre that mystifies historical conditions” but opinion has recently shifted towards the genre “representing the unreal and the real, the irrational and the rational” (Credo Reference np). This structure appears to exist outside of the anthropocene timescale, revealing while also concealing a past humanity cannot comprehend.
