Description:

This is an image of the cover page of the 1973 Green Tiger Press published republication of Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market, originally published in London in 1893. The book was originally published by Macmillan and Company, and then republished 80 years later by Green Tiger Press in La Jolla, California, for what is assumed to be because of copyright. Green Tiger Press is typically known for republishing popular childrens stories with images to fit a younger audience, whereas Macmillan and Company is known for publishing award-winning books for both children and adults, beginning with Christina Rossetti's published works when they first became a company in 1843. The Green Tiger Press edition, and this image specifically, is aimed towards having an older adult audience; As it is a republication of the version from Macmillan and Company, it has images that pertain to an older audience, as told by the representations that Laurence Housman, the illustrator, has put into them. The images were not designed for children, because of their explicit eroticism, however Housman's illustrations for Goblin Market first appeared in the form of a picture book. Christina Rossetti is noted as the only author, and no other names are mentioned apart from hers and Laurence Housman's.

This version of Goblin Market is a reprint, and therefore the exact poem is printed in full with no adaptations or changes made. With respect to the images in the text, there is a total of twelve fill-page images and numerous textual ornaments in this edition of Goblin Market, all illustrated by Laurence Housman. Housman lived from 1865-1959, growing up in Worcestershire and later living in London. He studied art and was inspired by Charles Ricketts, after meeting him in 1890, to move his art away from the style of the Pre-Raphaelites and towards pen-based art. He was the first to design Christina Rossetti’s Goblin Market as an independent volume in 1893, using the technique of wood block illustrations which he was known for, and gained much attention to it, being the point of which he formed his connection with Aubrey Beardsley of The Yellow Book. The images of this edition of Goblin Market are often full-page illustrations that are featured next to the section of text they represent.
