This gallery is a collection of artworks and images curated to exhibit occurrences and events during the 20th Century. Significantly, events surrounding WWI and the emergence of Modernism. The influences of The Great War endorsed literary modernism, which acknowledged the challenges brought upon due to the war. It encouraged modern and progressive thought and influenced the desire for progressive change, individualism, women's rights, and more. Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen is an anti-war poem that reveals how gruesome and tragic the act of war is. Wilfred Owens's use of vivid imagery and emphasis on realism in Dulce Decorum est changed society's perspective by revealing the horrors of World War I.

WWI Recruiting & Enlistment

Hundreds of men line up to join the army and fight for their country. This image shows the strong influence of propaganda used during WWI to recruit soldiers. The purpose of propaganda in the Great War was to persuade people to volunteer or join the army. Propaganda was displayed in many forms of media and also encouraged women to work in factories. The impact of Uncle Sam became a revolutionary hallmark and a patriotic symbol during the Great War. Men were encouraged by this figure and were proud to enlist. By the end of 1918, over 2.8 men were drafted.

The Horrors of WWI: Chlorine Gas

Two soldiers with severe injuries and chemical burns are shown in this photo. This horrifying photograph shows the damage done in chemical warfare during WWI. Chlorine gas, most commonly known as mustard gas, was created and used in WWI by Germans in 1917.  This sulfur-based gas is extremely toxic and causes very painful burns to the eyes and skin. Chlorine gas also causes severe injuries to the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. The injuries are characterized by pus-filled burns underneath the skin, bulla. The Anti-War Movement

The families of World War I soldiers are shown protesting outside the White House in opposition to the war. With the rise of patriotism, propaganda, and recruitment posters, opposition to war emerged. Anti-war groups led protests to promote peace and voice their opinions on the harshness of war and how it heavily impacted the soldiers and their families back home. Every nation in combat during the great war had anti-war movements. In the US specifically, women made the biggest impact on the movement in January 1915 when the Women's Peace Party set up a peace conference in the Netherlands...
Wilfred Owen and the Publication of Dulce Et Decorum Est

World War I changed literature, the period of modernism brought many opportunities for artists, writers, poets, and more to address their feelings toward the harsh realities of the war. One of the highest acclaimed war poets, Wilfred Owen, was an English soldier in WWI and wrote Dulce Et Decorum Est during the war and later published it in 1920. Often labeled as an anti-war poem, it was known for the opposition and condemnation of war using vivid imagery of the horrors of WWI. The End of WWI

Families all over the world were relieved to hear the news. World War I finally ended on November 11, 1918. The Great War came to an end when Germany formally surrendered by signing an armistice agreement with the Allies. From this point forward, this day was called Armistice Day. World War I claimed the lives of over 9 million soldiers and injured 21 million soldiers. Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, ending the global conflict once and for all. After four gruesome years of combat, WWI was known as the “war to end all wars.”
