Magdalene Asylums

Description:

Magdalene Asylums were created in order to help rehabilitate the fallen women. However, they were not as wonderful as they promised and promoted. They were considered prison-like due to the harsh conditions that women faced at these Magdalene Asylums. They were forced to participate in hard manual labor because it was thought that they had to "work away" all of their wrongdoings and sins. When doing so, they were required to wear modest clothing, and they were also in an enforced silence. Those that were running these asylums thought that this would help the women learn the proper way to act as ladies in the 19th century. While the women were there. They also had to subject themselves to extended periods of prayer because God was supposed to heal them from their actions. (Revisiting Dickens)
