Description:
This is just one of the many neat illustrations we can use for our exhibit once we choose a topic. George Cruikshank created "The Ogre Turns Himself into a Mouse; Tom Puss Springs Upon Him & Kills Him!" for "Puss and Boots," which forms part of his Fairy Library (1854). For this series, Cruikshank--an alcoholic turned teetotaler--turned tales like "Cinderella," "Jack and the Beanstalk," and "Puss and Boots" into temperance tracts. The illustrations are engaging, nonetheless, and in this plate Cruikshank uses a three-paneled effect (much as we find in graphic novels today) to create a sense of time and create action within one image.
