Description:
The Resident Evil game franchise discusses the themes of bio-terrorism, zombie outbreaks, and the struggle for survival in a world plagued by monstrous creatures and biochemical threats (not quite Gothic at first.) Players typically take on the role of characters, often members of special forces or civilians, who must navigate through environments filled with puzzles, enemies, and resource management while uncovering the overarching narrative involving corporations, particularly the Umbrella Corporation, and their unethical experimentation with viruses. Two of the games, Resident Evil IV and Resident Evil Village, find horror and inspiration in the Gothic. Resident Evil 4 revolves around the mystery and dread when Leon Kennedy travels to a remote village (characterized by dark forest and decaying architecture) in Spain bewitched by some unknown force. As the game progresses, players are pushed further into the depths of a vicious, science-wielding cult, religious symbolism, and mesmerizing Gothic castle where much of the game takes place.
Even more gothic is Resident Evil Village, where Ethan Winter attempts to save his infant daughter, Rose, from being sacrificed as part of a ritual in a remote Romanian village. Along the way, he contends with the fearsome Four Lords who each guarded a piece of her, as well as a whole pack of lycanthropic creatures that were once men. Village, similar to Resident Evil IV, takes place in Castle Dimitrescu and the sublocations encompasses a different subgenre of horror. The game's focus on folklore, witchcraft, and psychological horror further echoes gothic literature, as players confront fears and the dark secrets surrounding the characters. The game also pays homage to Dracula as there is a quarter of vampires that seems to be a play on Dracula and his three brides.
