Timeline- Goblin Market -Destini Ratliff

Part of Group:

Christina  Rossetti's "Goblin Market" focuses on the sexual stigma women faced in the Early 1900s. Women had to live up to the social standards of being objects in the male dominated world and their decisions of being "Fallen Woman" or "Angel I'm House " proves their value. Rossetti's poems touched on the role of feminism and religion. In this timeline, I will bring reflection to certain Historical events that influenced Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market" and the role of women in the early 1900s.

Prostitution in the Early 19th Century

In England Prostitution had become more visible in the early 1830s. Prostitution became very common in early 18th and 19th century especially in England. Women were still in the process for fighting fir their rights and being considered not equal and not having a say so. Prostitution was known as the "necessary evil" and was bad because men that were married to their wives could obtain sex freely even if the woman was free-willingly. Alothkigh prostitution was considered a crime at the time , it had became such a normal thing that women were granted license of public health and were made to get tested every week for sexually transmitted diseases. Once prostitution had gotten out of hand The Page Act of 1875 was passed to forbid any things sought out for women such as prostitution. This is when Magdalene Houses came into play with helping women transition from that lifestyle and becoming more clearer of who they are. Rossetti found influence from this era of Prostitution because it is a trait of a "fallen woman" men have taken the advantage of women for to long and she wanted to bring awareness through her poems including "Goblin Market".

Victorian Era

The Victorian Era was the period of Queen Victoria's reign which was from June 20, 1837 to January 22, 1901. The Victorian  Era was represented to show a point in a history where it was a female Monarch. At this time women still did not have the right to vote , own property if they were married or sue. Women were put into the domestic sphere around the Victorian Era, they were suppose to provide their husbands with a clean house, raise the kids, and have food on the table. Women during this era rarely had any rights they lost ownership of their wages, their physical properties, and any cash that was created once they were married.  Marriages were one of the hardest things to escape during the Victorian Era the husband was considered the power over the women and their homes. Verbal abuse, sexual violence , and economic deprivation are all issues Women had to face from their husbands during the time period. The Victorian Era becomes a significant influence for Christina Rossetti because without the value of having rights it could cause a women , to be available to the such dangers of prostitution if she wasn't married, get caught in affairs with married men, and lastly not be a wholesome women who carried herself as so. Rossetti's "Goblin Market " gives an example of how a women should be be able to turn from the defeatist energy from men.

Magdalene Asylum /Magdalene laundries

Magdalene laundries was A Roman Catholic organization that was open during the 18th century to the 20the century. The purpose of the organization was for housing "fallen women", which in certain means a woman who turned to prostitution, women who became pregnant outside of marriage, or the young ladies who did not have family support at all. While staying at the board they were required to work , and the goal was to treat the woman that had "fallen" not so much punish them. Magdalene asylums became very popular between the 1800s through 1900s when ending leaving behind around 300 asylums in England. Christina Rossetti's influence came from Magdalene laundries because she volunteered their shortly after composing "Goblin Market" . She volunteered at the institute between 1859-1870 , many believe that "Goblin Market" and the story behind the two sisters was inspired by some of the "fallen women" she had encountered at St Mary Magdalene house of Charity in Highgate. The importance of this historical place such as Magdalene is important because , it focuses on the idea of "fallen women" which is way at Rossetti sets focus on in her storyline of "Goblin Market" it starts off as just a trip to the market but as the story continues the sister tries to fall down a path of temptation which could be similar to the one some of the women had at the asylum.

The Progressive Era

The Awakening

The Progressive Era that took place in 1896-1916 included Progressive reformers that were middle- class society women or Christian ministers. The purpose of the movement was to fight against political corruption against certain laws that went against women's rights. Women were fighting to receive the right to vote, public health, education, and labor. Staying at home, and tending to children is what the U.S saw fit for women to do until the Progressive Era came in to effect, which then later resulted in the 19th Amendment being passed allowing women the right to vote and be recognized as equal citizens. The progressive era also addressed certain issues such as industrialization, urbanization, immigration, and political corruption. Christiana Rossetti's purpose as a author was to bring awareness to the virtue of women and she invested time into making sure that they were pushed in the right direction of being an asset and also holding themselves to a higher standard. Women realized they wanted more so the pushed the right to be equal and have equal opportunities as men.
