Engraving of CloughThis timeline, map, and gallery exhibit will accompany a critical edition of Arthur Hugh Clough's Amours de Voyage, to be completed as part of a graduate seminar at Purdue Univerity over winter 2021. We plan to use these resources to help explain the many geographical, cultural, and historical references in Clough's verse-novel.

A spectacular Roman Bridge, completed in AD 134. Built for the emperor Hadrian, it originally functioned as a cofferdam. A cofferdam is a watertight enclosure used in regards to bridges to hold back water within an area.

Italy is a republic in Europe. It borders on France, Slovenia, Austria, and Switzerland. Italy is surrounded on three sides by water, namely the Ligurian Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the Ionian Sea. Italy includes the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Its capital is Rome. Tourism is a large source of income.

Monte Testaccio. Known as “broken pot mountain,” Monte Testaccio is a man-made hill formed entirely from broken pots. It is composed of amphora dating back  to the 1st and mid-3rd centuries.

German for Germany. Germany is a central European country. It is the fifth largest country in Europe. Germany is bordered by Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. Germany contains sixteen states. Germany is known for its metalworking, chemical production, shipbuilding, and machinery manufacturing.

Switzerland is a landlocked European country. It is bordered by Italy, France, Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein. Switzerland is divided from Italy by Lake Lugano and the Alpine Crests. Switzerland has three official languages: French, German, and Italian. Its major exports are pharmaceuticals, watches, machinery, precision instruments, metals, jewellery, and electronics.

Turin is a city in the Turin province of Italy. It is located near two major rivers, the Po and Dora Riparia, and as such is a major transportation and business hub. Many buildings in Turin date from the 17th to 19th century.

Orta is a lake in the Novara province of Italy.  It is occasionally called Lake Cusio. Orta  gives water to the town of Omegna and contains the islet of San Giulio.

Baveno is a village in Italy. It is located in the Novara Province. There is a Health Resort with mineral water within the village, and there are boat rides to the Borromean Islands.
