Engaging English (F21 ENGL 20200-001 Purdue) Dashboard

Description

image of surfingThis class will teach you how to surf (the Internet) and about the various ways that English studies have been transformed over the last few decades.  Starting with some basic close-reading and analysis skills (aided by annotation at COVE Studio), we will then explore how those skills have been increasingly applied to new areas of inquiry (tv, film, culture, critical theory, and politics).  Throughout, we will employ new digital tools that change the way we approach our subjects of inquiry, including Web annotation, timeline-building, gallery-building and GIS mapping.  As we proceed, we will consider the nature of English studies:  What is an English department and how does it relate to the rest of the university?  What can you do with an English degree?  Why is it necessary to fight for English in an increasingly STEM-oriented world?

The Bisexual Center, according to it's founders, is a safe haven to promote a more sex-positive environment for bisexual persons. The desire for a place that bisexual persons can be authentically themselves started when a group of people, all of them bisexual, got together and attempted to create a center where they can hold potlucks and gatherings and generally a safe space for bisexuals to celebrate their sexuality without feeling any judgement. The main issue for creating the center however, was the lack of any sort of financial backing, which was the only thing blocking them from success.

The most prominent person that helped the center become a reality was Dr. Maggi Rubenstein. Rubenstein and her two partners that helped her tremondously, David Lourea and Margo Rila, initially tried to get the amount of money they needed to open up the Bisexual Center in 1974 from the owner of the local paper that was closest to them, The Berkeley Barb, however, this idea has...

In Indonesia, according to 2016 UNICEF statistics, 49% of girls between birth and 14 years old have undergone FGM/C. Nearly 3 in 4 girls underwent the procedure when they were less than 6 months old, some even having these procedures done before they were 30 days old. In 2006, the Indonesia Ministry of Health issued a letter prohibiting female genital mutilation/circumcision done by medical professionals, however in 2010 the Ministry issued a decree (PMK No. 1636/2010) that allowed only licensed doctors, midwives, and nurses to practice FGM/C and that it should only be performed upon request by the person, or their parent or guardian. Nearly every single hospital, including private maternity clinics, continued to perform female circumcision so that it would be done in a cleaner, safer environment. In February 2014, the Women’s Commission in Indonesia and the Committee on the Rights of the Child, after persistent advocation, got the decree PMK No. 1636/2010 repealed, however there...

British rule introduced an era in which officials held varying opinions regarding the caste system and whether to proceed in enforcing or dismantling it. Ultimately, there were concerns about Indian society falling apart without the structure of their long-held social order, and although many from the British side viewed caste as being an inhumane institution, they did not make any efforts to dismantle it. On the contrary, they used it to their own benefit in order to further the legitimacy of their station and exercise control over the Indians.

British segregation was exemplified when the East India...
