Sussex is a county that covers the southeastern part of England; south of London to be more exact (“Sussex”). Additionally, Sussex at this current time is divided into three administrative counties: East Sussex, West Sussex, as well as Brighton and Hove (“Sussex”). England did not always control Sussex, however; the Romans were the original inhabitants of this land (“Sussex”). Subsequently, a faction known as the South Saxons (of which the name of Sussex is derived) invaded the land and settled (“Sussex”). Following this, the new kingdom of Sussex conquered the neighboring kingdom of Wessex, expanding its area (“Sussex”). Since its founding, Sussex haas seen much growth, mostly through the 18th-20th centuries ("Sussex").

In researching this area, my understanding of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility is deepened because it allows me to understand why much of the story takes place in it. The Dashwoods move to this area following the death of...

One of the major scenes within Sense and Sensibility is the ball scene in which Willoughby and the Dashwood sisters have their confrontation. In the adaptations of the novel, this scene is filmed at the historic Wilton House. The Wilton House is owned by the Earl and Countess of Pembroke, who are descendants of Sir William Herbert. During the regency period, this was a popular place for the wealthy and elite to gather during the Winter as it was known for its Debutant Balls. Another name for this winter retreat to England was “the season” in which eligible young men and women are introduced into society and the wealthy would make and strengthen connections. Debutantes were between the ages of 17 to 18 and after this formal introduction were pushed into the brunt of high society. Other social events such as cocktail parties and dances were also held at the Wilton House. Currently, The Wilton House is a preserved historical site that travelers can visit. It is also a popular...

The location of Delaford, England was mentioned a few times in the novel Sense & Sensibility.  This was Colonel Brandon’s home. He eventually begins a relationship with Marianne, and this is where they will reside. Not to mention, Colonel Brandon also offers Edward and Elinor a piece of estate on his land. This means that the sisters will be on the same land and be able to continue their plays off each other’s sense and sensibility. In the real world, Delaford is the location of Dorest also known as Dorsetshire, England. Dorset has a varied landscape featuring broad elevated chalk downs, steep limestone ridges and low-lying clay valleys (Dorset). During the 19th century in Dorest, “poor families could be housed in one of three broad ways. Firstly, they could take over existing accommodation such as empty farmhouses, or cottages. Individuals were more likely to lodge with existing farmers and cottagers. In other cases, it was...

London and The London Social Season

During the Regency Era, London was populated by the elite especially during certain parts of the year.  Like some of the families in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, many of those who were part of the elite or the nobility had country homes as their main residences but traveled to town during what was called London Season or the social season.  During this time, festivals and balls were held, which offered opportunities for young people to be officially introduced to society (Wikipedia).  London Season usually began in October or November and lasted until April or May (Knowles), which is about the same time frame for the Dashwood sisters’ visit to town.  However, historically, these dates could vary, as the Season coincided with sessions of Parliament, as the festivities were established as a way for families of the members of Parliament to keep busy (Hatch).

“Town” as it is often called, does not refer to London...

Devonshire, present-day Devon, is the village where the Dashwood’s move to after the passing of Mr. Dashwood. The four Dashwood women leave their luxurious home in Sussex, England to live in the less-fancy, Barton Cottage, in Southwest England. The village is described by Jane Austen in Sense and Sensibility as, “chiefly on one of these hills and formed a pleasant view from the cottage windows. The prospect in front was more extensive; it commanded the whole of the valley and reached into the country beyond. The hills which surrounded the cottage terminated the valley in that direction; under another name, and in another course, it branched out again between two of the steepest of them” (Austen). Austen uses a lot of environmental imagery, which is accurate of Devonshire. It is home to many cliffs and beaches, with the largest open space in southern England (“Devon”). Readers of Austen’s novel also notice that many scenes in her text occur outside...
