The total population of the island is 7,000,000. And because of famine, the people of Ireland migrated to new lives. 

4.  The research I have done helps us all to understand the novel better by comprehending what would cause Irish workers to come work for John Thornton. Desperate people follow the paying work and want food for their families, this aspect ties into the themes of class struggle and the idea of a master. By understanding the people of Ireland, we as readers can find empathy and understand their motivations in why they would say yes to the job offer.
