The Co-Directors of the San Francisco Bisexual Center

Description:

This picture shown here shows the two co-founders of the San Francisco Bisexual Center, which are the two women on the right on the photo, Dr. Maggi Rubenstein and Dr. Harriet Leve. The man shown on the left, Dr. David Loureau, has also made huge impacts to the founding of the center, as he tried to help with the funding of the center and is a huge part of the center itself. The picture that was taken here was at the center itself during one of the many social gatherings the center holds weekly.

The most vital person to the creation of the Bisexual Center was Dr. Maggi Rubenstein. She was born and raised in San Francisco, and was trained as a nurse for many years of her life. She came out as a bisexual in her early thirties to her family and friends while working at the Center for Special Problems, a business that works with a variety of clients, including sexual minority groups. She credited the women's movements going on during that time period as giving her the sense of strength and courage she needed to come out as bisexual. She realized she was bisexual as she was beginning to have feelings for both sexes, and she obtained an "immense sense of relief" when she found other self-identified bisexuals that she became close with, and that has led her to create the idea of "a community center for bisexual people so that others would not have to struggle alone" (Rubenstein 1983).

Dr. Harriet Leve also identifies as a bisexual, and her part of finding the Bisexual Center comes from the money she has provided in order for the center to be created.
