Altab Ali Park
Altab Ali Park is located in London, England. It was originally known as St. Mary's Park as it was the site of a fourteenth century church called St. Mary Matfelon. Unfortunaltley, St. Mary Matfelon was heavily bombed during the Blitz of World War II and all that remains is the foundation and several graves. In 1998, the park was renamed in memory of Altab Ali. Ali was a twenty-five year old Bangladeshi worker who in 1978 was murdered near the park on his way home from work. This murder was only one of several racially-motivated crimes that occured in this area of London, and Altab Ali Park now stands as a memorial to all of the victims of those crimes.Â
Quote from Brick Lane: "Out of the estate and onto Commercial Road, past the clothes wholesaler’s, up Adler Street, and left onto the brief green respite of Altab Ali Park, where the neat, pale-faced block of flats had picture windows and a gated entrance, from which the City boys could stroll to work."
