Cornwall (Prologue of The Remains of the Day)
Cornwall is a county in England located on a peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by mild weather and large amounts of rain weather, both a result of its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. While Cornwall contains many sea ports used for shipping resources, tourism accounts for a majority amount of the economy due to the natural beauty of the area. In fact, many areas along its coast are so beautiful that they have come under the protection of the British government and can no longer be commercialized. This tourist appeal can be found in Kazuo Ishiguro's "The Remains of the Day", where Stevens references Mrs. Symons's writings of the area, "complete with photographs and...a variety of artists' sketches of that [Cornwall] region" (Page 11).
